Not very many of us aware that Australian community geographical domain names are now available - one can register a domain in the following zones (without the usual .com.au / .net.au stuff) - act.au, nsw.au, nt.au, qld.au, sa.au, tas.au, vic.au, wa.au These domains are “…solely for the purpose of operating a community website developed for the benefit of the entire local community.” This web site has all the info: http://www.aucd.org.au/
Fast Hit is supporting one of such community projects which is planned to be launched this Friday: http://www.armadale.wa.au/
This sounds like a great idea, but the time will show if community projects can be self sustainable in that way.
At this stage only one web site appears to accept live registrations for $164 AUD for 2 yrs.
