Are there any good Free Hosts?

As you know, hosting is something I do for work (i.e., managing Fast Hit). But I’ve always been interested to find out what lies behind all those free hosts, that offer a lot of hosting space, traffic, all for free. Well.. there is nothing free in life and I decided to test some of these services to find out what’s the catch. Here is my first one – happyhost.org and here is another one – 000space.com.

I will setup an account with each free hosting service that is reviewed, monitor it over a few weeks and provide feedback if something blows up.

My WordCount Journal

I was searching Google for free blog services out there. There are dozens, or maybe hundreds striving to become noticeable, to get close to Blogspot or WP in magnitude. Most, will never make it. But a few really stand out.

One of this is WordCount Journal. I just opened mine there too.

I like the concept. One word the first day, two words the second etc. By the end of the year I will write a total of 66,795 words. It’s a size of a novel!

Use Gmail for your Hotmail

I did a few posts about Hotmail lately, mainly because it’s been a very long time since I logged to my Hotmail account last and I it was good to see that Hotmail is trying to catch up with other free webmail providers like Google and Yahoo.

A few months ago Microsoft announced that they enabled POP3 and SMTP for Hotmail.

This is good news. For us folks, who are addicted to Gmail, we can now setup Gmail to retrieve emails from Hotmail! I just tested it myself, and it seems to work very well. All you need to do is to get Gmail to POP emails from your Hotmail account. And here is how.

Use Gmail to Manage Hotmail.

1. Login to Gmail
2. Go to Settings > Accounts Tab and click “Add a mail account you own”

You’ll see “Add a mail account you own” popup window

gmail-add-account

EMail address: Enter your Hotmail address and click “Next”

Username: your full Hotmail email
Password: your Hotmail password
POP Server: pop3.live.com
Port: 995
Tick “Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail.

Select other options they way you like.

Click “Add Account” button.

That’s it! If you entered all settings correctly, you’ll see a green confirmation message.

You can now read your Hotmail Emails from your Gmail account! Nice.

Most useful Twits

I joined twitter just a couple of weeks ago. Previously, I heard a lot (quite annoying really) about it, but held back, just to see how long I could resist the temptation. Now that I’m on it, I’m looking for suggestions, what are the most useful twit services are out there?

I found this, that I find very useful – Perth Weather – http://twitter.com/perthweather

What are others worth looking/ following?

Thanks.

Download WordPress Fjords Theme

Since I update my blog theme – a had a few people asking for a link to download this WordPress Fjords Theme. I remember it took me a while to find this Fjords theme. I saw and liked it on other blogs but couldn’t find it right away, as the author’s web site is no longer available and the discussion at WordPress is without a link to download.

So, I take the liberty to post this file for download: Download Fjords WordPress Theme.

What is bloo?

www.bloo.com.au

What is bloo? There are huge billboards in Northbridge advertising bloo.com.au – bloo business directory search. Where did they get their listings from? Is there a place for yet one more on-line directory??

WAIX.info gets a new look

WAIX Info web site

waix.info now has a new look. I’ve run this web site for a number of years and it gets quite a number of waix searches from Google and other search engines. The old web site was using a wiki and I found that not many people were keen to add their listings to the site. The system is now ported to WP and has a WAIX Directory section. If you are an ISP on WAIX or if you have a web site that is hosted with one of those ISPs, please add your web site to the WAIX directory.

A new theme for this blog.

Here we go. A new, interesting theme for this blog. It is Fjords by Peterandrej. Do you like it?

Use GMail for backup & storage space!

Are you sick and tired fiddling with flash drives just to get a few files home and back? There is a much simpler solution – Gmail Drive. All you need is a free GMail account. And a simple, very light, program running on your computer. I have a friend who’s been using it for 3 years, non stop, and it hasn’t crashed ones or caused any problems.

So, there you are. Once installed, you’ll see “Gmail drive” inside your “My Computer”. When you copy a file there, it sends an email to your gmail account with this file as an attachment (you can see that email in your gmail inbox). Nice.

More info – here.
